The ABB SPASI23 is a high-density, precision analog input module designed for the Symphony Plus and legacy INFI 90 control systems. It acts as the primary interface for temperature sensors and low-voltage field signals, converting analog data into digital values for the controller. A defining feature of the SPASI23 is its “converter-per-channel” architecture; by giving each of the 16 channels its own 24-bit analog-to-digital converter, the module eliminates the speed and noise issues associated with multiplexed inputs. This enables near-instantaneous data acquisition and superior signal isolation, which is critical for high-speed turbine control or sensitive chemical process monitoring.

Model Comparison: SPASI23 vs. Similar Models
The SPASI23 serves as a modernized, high-resolution replacement for the SPASI03 and SPASI13 modules. While the older versions utilized lower-bit resolution and shared converters, the SPASI23’s 24-bit depth provides significantly finer granularity for precision measurements. It is also a “fit and function” replacement for the IMASI23, meaning it can be used in legacy INFI 90 racks with minimal configuration changes. Unlike the SPASO11, which is a 14-channel Analog Output module, the SPASI23 focuses strictly on high-integrity signal input. It also offers better thermal stability and diagnostic capabilities than the SPFEC12 series, making it the preferred choice for mission-critical “HR Series” rack deployments.
Operational Guidelines
- Configuration Logic: When replacing an older SPASI03 or SPASI13, verify the settings for Function Code 216. Specification S11 must be adjusted to account for the SPASI23’s higher 24-bit resolution to ensure the controller interprets the data scale correctly.
- Lead Wire Compensation: For RTD inputs, the module automatically performs lead wire resistance adjustment. Ensure that 3-wire or 4-wire RTDs are landed correctly on the terminal block to allow the module to cancel out wire impedance.
- Cold Junction Compensation (CJC): When using thermocouples, ensure the appropriate termination unit (e.g., NTAI06) with integrated CJC sensors is utilized. The SPASI23 relies on these external reference temperatures to maintain accuracy across wide ambient shifts.
- Power Consumption: The SPASI23 has a different power profile than legacy modules due to its 16 individual A/D converters. Review the system power supply sizing calculations (especially the 5V and 24V rails) when performing a large-scale upgrade to prevent cabinet overloads.
