Installation & Configuration Guide

Phase 1: Pre-Installation (10 Minutes)

⚠️ Warning: The 125840-01 deals with high-voltage AC. Ensure the source circuit breaker is locked out/tagged out (LOTO) before accessing the rear terminals. Even if the rack is redundant, accidental contact with the AC input pins can be fatal.

Preparation:

  • Verify if your rack is configured for “Single” or “Redundant” power.
  • If redundant, you can replace one 3500/15 module while the machinery protection system is still active (Online).
  • Tools: #2 Phillips screwdriver, Fluke 115 Multimeter.

Phase 2: Removal (5 Minutes)

  1. Check Status: Ensure the “OK” LED on the other power supply (if redundant) is solid green before proceeding.
  2. Loosen Screws: Unscrew the two captive Phillips screws on the front panel of the 125840-01.
  3. Extract: Pull the module straight out using the ejector tabs.
  4. Safety Check: Inspect the backplane connector for any signs of “pitting” or black carbon deposits, which could indicate a short in the rack backplane.

Phase 3: Installation (10 Minutes)

  1. Verify Voltage: Before sliding the new module in, check the AC input at the rear terminal block. It should be within the 85-264 V AC range.
  2. Slot Alignment: Slide the 125840-01 into the card guides. The module must be installed in the left-most slots of the 3500 rack.
  3. Seating: Firmly push the module until it seats into the backplane. Tighten the captive screws—do not over-torque, just hand-tight plus a quarter turn.
  4. Redundancy Check: If you have a second power supply, ensure the “Supply” LED on both modules is illuminated.

Phase 4: Testing (5 Minutes)

  1. LED Verification:
    • OK (Green): Internal self-tests passed.
    • Supply (Green): Input voltage is present.
  2. Software Confirmation: Open the 3500 Rack Configuration Software. Check the “Rack Status” tab to ensure no “Power Supply Error” events are active.
  3. Load Check: Ensure the rack is not exceeding the 175 W limit (usually not an issue unless the rack is fully loaded with high-draw monitors).

Customer Cases & Industry Applications

Case 1: Redundancy Failure in a Power Generation Plant

Situation: A combined-cycle power plant in Southeast Asia noticed the “OK” LED was off on one of their two 3500/15 power supplies. The rack was still running on the redundant unit, but they were one failure away from losing vibration monitoring on their primary steam turbine.

The Problem: Local distributors quoted a 6-week lead time. The plant’s insurance policy required 100% monitoring uptime for the turbine to remain operational.

Our Action: We provided an immediate quote for a New Surplus 125840-01. We sent high-res photos of the unit’s serial number and the 500 V insulation resistance test we performed using a Megger.

Result: The module arrived in 3 days. The client swapped it while the system was live. They avoided a “blind” operation period, which would have cost them $50,000/day in increased insurance premiums and risk.

Case 2: Emergency Replacement during a Maintenance Turnaround

Situation: During a refinery turnaround, an old power supply failed to power back up after a planned shutdown. The 3500 rack wouldn’t initialize, preventing the restart of a critical compressor.

The Problem: Every hour the compressor was down delayed the refinery’s restart, costing thousands in lost production.

Our Action: We shipped a tested 125840-01 from our local inventory via a dedicated courier.

Result: The module was onsite within 12 hours. The compressor was brought back online that evening. The maintenance lead later said, “Having a reliable source for these older 3500 parts saved our restart schedule.”

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Can I mix this AC power supply with a DC power supply in the same rack? A: No. The 3500 rack requires both power supply modules (if using redundancy) to be of the same type. You cannot mix the 125840-01 (AC) with a 125840-02 (DC) supply.

Q: Why does my module show a “Bypass” LED? A: The Bypass LED usually indicates that the Rack Configuration Keylock is in the “Program” position, or a specific monitor is in bypass mode. If the module itself is failing, usually the “OK” LED will turn off or flash red.

Q: Is there a difference between the 125840-01 and the older 127610-01? A: The 125840-01 is the high-voltage AC version, whereas the 127610-01 was a legacy part number for the same series. The 125840-01 is the current standard for AC-powered 3500 racks and is fully backward compatible.

Q: Do you offer the “Legacy” 3500 power supplies, or only the newer versions? A: We focus on the “New Surplus” versions of the 125840-01. These are the more modern, efficient designs that replaced the early 1990s versions. They are a direct “drop-in” replacement with better thermal management.

Q: How do you verify the unit is truly “New Surplus”? A: We check three things: First, the date code on the serial number. Second, we inspect the gold-plated fingers on the backplane connector—any “scuffing” indicates it’s been plugged in multiple times (used). Third, we perform a 24-hour load test at 100 W to ensure no early-life component failure.
