Installation & Configuration Guide
Phase 1: Pre-Installation (Preparation) Estimated Time: 10 minutes
⚠️ Safety Protocol:
- Confirm that adding this carrier does not exceed the maximum LocalBus power limit for your controller.
- Ensure the DIN rail is properly grounded to the cabinet common earth.
- Keep the dust caps on the carrier connectors until the I/O modules are ready for insertion.
Tools & Accessories:
- 35 mm DIN rail clips (standard)
- KJ4001X1-CJ1 Controller Carrier (for the head of the row)
- VE4002S1T2B5 terminal blocks for field wiring
Phase 2: Mounting the Carrier Estimated Time: 5 minutes
- Alignment: Hook the KJ3204X1-BA1 onto the top of the DIN rail.
- Latching: Press down on the bottom of the carrier until the rail latch clicks into place.
- Serial Connection: If connecting to another carrier, slide the carrier firmly to the left to engage the LocalBus connector.
- Security: Tighten the carrier-to-carrier locking screws to prevent vibration-induced disconnects.
Phase 3: Wiring & Power Estimated Time: 10 minutes
- Power Input: Connect the 24 V DC power cables to the redundant power plugs.
- Grounding: Ensure the ground lug is connected to the system ground bus.
- Address Setting: DeltaV carries automatically address based on their physical position relative to the controller. No DIP switches are required on the carrier itself.
- Terminal Blocks: Snap the VE4002S1T2B5 blocks onto the bottom portion of each I/O slot.
Phase 4: System Integration Estimated Time: 15 minutes
- Power-On: Switch on the 24 V DC supply. Verify the power LEDs on the controller are green.
- DeltaV Explorer: Open the DeltaV Explorer on your ProPlus station.
- Auto-Sense: Right-click on the I/O subsystem and select “Auto-sense I/O Cards.” The 8 slots on the new carrier should appear.
- Diagnostics: Check for “Carrier Power Failure” alarms which might indicate a loose power plug.

Customer Cases & Industry Applications
Case 1: Refinery Expansion Project A refinery in the Middle East was adding 40 new temperature points to an existing DeltaV S-Series system. The original lead time from the manufacturer for the KJ3204X1-BA1 was nearly 16 weeks. We provided five “New Surplus” units from our local stock. By utilizing these carriers, the plant was able to mount the I/O modules and finish field wiring during a planned 7-day turnaround, avoiding a $200,000 delay in project commissioning.
Case 2: Recovering from Water Damage A pharmaceutical facility experienced a pipe burst that flooded a remote I/O cabinet. Several carriers were shorted out. Since the 12P3275X032 backplane is the “backbone” of the I/O row, the entire system stayed down until replacements were found. We delivered four carriers and matching VE4002S1T2B5 terminal blocks within 48 hours. Our technical team assisted remotely to verify that the “Auto-sense” feature correctly mapped the existing modules back to their original software tags.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Does the KJ3204X1-BA1 include the 8-wide I/O modules? A: No. This is the carrier (backplane) only. You must purchase the individual I/O modules (e.g., AI, AO, DI, DO) separately. We do, however, keep many DeltaV S-Series modules in stock if you need a complete bundle.
Q: What is the difference between the KJ3204X1-BA1 and the KJ3204X1-BA2? A: These are often revision differences. In my experience, the BA1 (12P3275X032) is the most common version for S-Series. They are generally interchangeable, but you should verify your specific cabinet depth and mounting orientation.
Q: Can I mix S-Series carriers with M-Series carriers? A: No. S-Series hardware (like this carrier) uses a different physical form factor and LocalBus connector than the older M-Series. You cannot physically plug them together.
Q: Why do I need the VE4002S1T2B5 terminal block? A: The carrier provides the digital communication path, but the terminal block is where the actual field wires (4-20 mA signals, etc.) are landed. You need one terminal block for every I/O module you plan to install on the carrier.
Q: Is this “New Surplus” the same as “Refurbished”? A: Definitely not. Refurbished units are used parts that have been cleaned or repaired. Our KJ3204X1-BA1 units are “New Surplus,” meaning they have never seen a single hour of field service. They come in original or equivalent protective packaging and pass our full diagnostic testing before they leave the warehouse.
