Description
The GE Hydran M2 is a field-proven, on-line monitoring system designed for power and industrial transformers. It provides continuous, real-time analysis of dissolved gases and moisture in transformer oil, acting as an early-warning system to detect developing insulation faults before they lead to catastrophic failure or unplanned outages.
Core Functions & Capabilities
- Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA): It measures key fault gases—specifically hydrogen (H_2) and other dissolved gases (like carbon monoxide, acetylene, and ethylene, depending on the sensor type)—that indicate insulation degradation.
- Moisture Monitoring: The device includes an integrated sensor that measures water-in-oil content, which is critical for identifying potential issues like gasket leaks or the degradation of insulating paper.
- Transformer Diagnostics: By connecting additional sensors (such as top/bottom oil temperature or load current), the M2 can correlate DGA and moisture data with real-time operating conditions. It can also perform onboard calculations based on IEEE standards to model transformer health, such as winding hot-spot temperatures.
- Integration: It offers various communication protocols (Modbus, DNP3, and optional IEC 61850) for easy integration into SCADA, DCS, or GE’s Perception fleet management software.

Key Features
- Form Factor: Compact, all-in-one design that mounts directly onto a standard 1.5″ transformer oil valve, typically without requiring a power outage for installation.
- Expandability: It features expansion slots for analog input/output cards, allowing you to monitor additional parameters as your needs evolve.
- Durability: Housed in a NEMA 4X (IP56-rated) enclosure, it is designed to operate in harsh outdoor environments (-40 °C to +55 °C ambient).
- Self-Diagnostics: The system performs automatic self-tests every 15 days to alert users to internal faults, sensor issues, or power failures.
Evolution: The Hydran M2-X
The Hydran M2-X is the current, next-generation evolution of the original M2 platform. It builds upon the M2’s foundation with:
- Extended Sensor Life: Optimized for lower maintenance.
- Enhanced Compatibility: Supports newer synthetic and natural ester-based insulating fluids in addition to traditional mineral oils.
- Hazardous Location Options: The M2-X-HZ version is UL-certified for Class I, Division 2 environments, making it suitable for industrial settings where flammable vapors or gases may be present.
Support & Maintenance
- Current Status: While the original M2 (Mark III) has been a staple for many years, GE Vernova (formerly GE Grid Solutions) has transitioned to the Hydran M2-X as the primary current-generation solution.
- Software: The system is fully compatible with Perception™ software, which is the industry standard for downloading, trending, and analyzing data from GE transformer monitoring devices.
- Serviceability: Because these devices monitor critical infrastructure, it is recommended to work directly with authorized GE Vernova service providers for calibration, sensor replacement, or firmware updates to ensure the integrity of your diagnostics.
