Description
The ICS Triplex T8461 is a high-integrity, Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) digital output module designed for the Trusted® safety system platform. Now part of the Rockwell Automation portfolio, this module is engineered to provide the highest levels of safety and availability for critical industrial processes. It features 40 fully supervised output channels, making it ideal for Emergency Shutdown (ESD), Fire and Gas (F&G), and Burner Management Systems (BMS).

Key Functional Features
- Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR): Each channel utilizes three independent output switches in a specialized voting circuit. The internal “Fault Tolerant” architecture allows the module to maintain operation even if one internal processing slice fails.
- Line Supervision: The module continuously monitors field wiring for both “Open Circuit” and “Short Circuit” conditions in both the ON and OFF states.
- Internal Self-Testing: The T8461 performs automatic background tests, including “stuck-at” diagnostics, without affecting the state of the field device.
- Hot-Swap Capability: The module can be replaced while the system is live and the process is running, provided a redundant partner or spare slot is available.

Application Areas
The T8461 is typically deployed in high-consequence environments where downtime is unacceptable:
- Oil & Gas: Control of critical isolation valves and emergency shutdown sequences.
- Chemical Processing: Management of safety-critical interlocks and reactor cooling systems.
- Power Generation: Coordination of fuel-trip valves and turbine protection logic.
- Nuclear Industry: Deployment in auxiliary safety control loops and reactor protection systems.
Country of Origin
The ICS Triplex T8461 is primarily manufactured in the United Kingdom (UK). ICS Triplex, originally an independent British company, established its center for safety technology in Maldon, Essex, where the Trusted® series continues to be produced under Rockwell Automation standards.
Installation and Maintenance
Mechanical Installation
- Slotting: The module is designed to slide into a Trusted® Controller Chassis. Align the module with the guide rails and use the ejector handles to seat the connectors into the backplane.
- Field Termination: The T8461 interfaces with field wiring through a specialized Field Termination Assembly (FTA). External cables connect the FTA to the module’s backplane pins to ensure signal integrity.
Diagnostic Indicators
- Healthy (Green LED): Indicates the module is operating normally in TMR mode.
- Active (Amber LED): Indicates the module is currently processing I/O data.
- Fault (Red LED): Indicates a critical hardware failure. The module’s internal voting logic will attempt to maintain the safety state until the unit is replaced.
