Product Description The MECS CS-1000 UTX1700PTFE is a specialized, high-performance sealing component frequently used in aggressive chemical environments. The “UTX” designation typically refers to a multi-directionally expanded PTFE structure. Unlike standard PTFE, which can suffer from “creep” or cold flow under pressure, the multi-directional expansion process creates a highly fibrillated microstructure. This ensures the gasket maintains its thickness and sealing pressure over time, even under thermal cycling. The “1700PTFE” variant is specifically optimized for high-purity and high-strength applications where zero leakage is mandatory.
Application Areas This sealing material is primarily utilized in the Sulphuric Acid industry (MECS, a subsidiary of Elessent Clean Technologies, is a leader in this field). Key applications include:
- Acid Tower Flanges: Sealing large-diameter flanges in heat exchangers and absorption towers.
- Chemical Piping: High-reliability seals for transport lines carrying concentrated acids or alkalis.
- Pharmaceutical/Food: Use in processes requiring high-purity materials that do not contaminate the medium.
- Heat Exchangers: Handling the differential thermal expansion of plate and shell-and-tube heat exchangers.

Operational Precautions
- Flange Surface: Ensure flange faces are clean and free of deep scratches. While expanded PTFE is excellent at “conformability” (filling irregularities), major defects can still lead to bypass leakage.
- Torque Sequence: Always use a calibrated torque wrench and follow a “star” or “cross” tightening pattern in multiple increments (30%, 60%, 100% torque). This ensures even compression of the PTFE fibers.
- No Adhesives: Do not use grease or pipe dope on the gasket surfaces. These can act as lubricants, causing the gasket to extrude (blow out) under high pressure.
- Re-Torquing: For high-temperature applications, it is often recommended to perform a “hot re-torque” after the system has reached operating temperature to account for initial material relaxation.
