Product Description The MTL 8502-BI-DP is a high-performance PROFIBUS DP Bus Interface (BI) module designed for the MTL8000 distributed I/O system. Its primary role is to bridge the communication between a PROFIBUS DP master (such as a Siemens S7 PLC or a high-level DCS) and the local MTL8000 I/O modules. The module handles all cyclic data exchange, converting the digital signals from the backplane into standard PROFIBUS packets. It is designed for mounting in Zone 2 hazardous areas, provided it is housed in a suitable enclosure, and it supports full GSD-based configuration for easy integration into standard engineering tools.
Application Areas This communication module is widely utilized in process industries where distributed I/O is required over a medium-to-long distance. Common applications include:
- Petrochemical & Refining: Connecting remote I/O drops in process skids to a central control room.
- Water Treatment: Managing widely dispersed field instruments and valves.
- Pharmaceuticals: Distributed control of batch processing units.
- Offshore Platforms: Reducing wiring costs by placing I/O closer to the field devices in hazardous zones.

Operational Precautions
- GSD Files: Ensure you have the correct
.GSDfile installed in your PROFIBUS master’s configuration software (e.g., STEP 7 or TIA Portal) to properly map the I/O data. - Network Termination: Standard PROFIBUS rules apply. If the 8502-BI-DP is the first or last device on the network segment, the termination resistor in the 9-pin D-sub connector must be switched to the “ON” position.
- Addressing: The PROFIBUS station address (1-125) must be set correctly using the hardware switches or software tools provided by MTL. Duplicate addresses will cause the entire segment to malfunction.
- Backplane Compatibility: This module must be seated on a compatible MTL8000 carrier. Ensure the pins are clean and the module is fully latched to prevent intermittent “Bus Fault” (BF) errors.
