Installation & Configuration Guide

Phase 1: Pre-Installation (Estimated time: 15 minutes)

⚠️ Safety Protocol:

  1. Ensure the 24 V DC power source is switched off. HMIs are sensitive to “hot-plugging” the power terminal.
  2. If the old screen is cracked, wear gloves. The glass in older Pro-face units can be sharp.
  3. Crucial: Verify your backup project file (.prw or .prow) in GP-Pro PB III software. Without this file, a new HMI is just a blank brick.

Phase 2: Removal (Estimated time: 10 minutes)

  1. Cable Disconnection: Unplug the power terminal block and the serial communication cables (D-sub).
  2. Mounting Fasteners: Locate the metal mounting clips (usually 4 to 10 clips) around the perimeter. Loosen the screws and slide the clips out of the HMI chassis slots.
  3. Panel Removal: Push the HMI forward through the panel cutout. Clean the panel surface of any old gasket residue to ensure the new unit seals correctly.

Phase 3: Configuration (Estimated time: 20 minutes)

  1. Software Link: Use the GPW-CB02 (Serial) or GPW-CB03 (USB to Serial) cable.
  2. Transfer Mode: Power on the 0880001-01. If it’s new, it should boot into a “Wait for Transfer” screen. If not, enter the system menu by touching opposite corners of the screen (e.g., Top Right and Bottom Left) within 0.5 seconds of each other.
  3. Project Download: In GP-Pro PB III, select “Transfer” and send the project to the HMI. Ensure the “Protocol” (e.g., Mitsubishi MELSEC, Siemens S7, etc.) matches your PLC.

Phase 4: Commissioning (Estimated time: 15 minutes)

  1. Gasket Check: Ensure the waterproof gasket is seated flat. A pinched gasket will allow moisture to enter the enclosure.
  2. Re-mounting: Insert the unit into the cutout and tighten the clips. Do not over-tighten (0.5 to 0.6 N·m is enough); over-tightening can warp the touch membrane and cause “ghost touches.”
  3. Live Test: Check that data is reading from the PLC. If you see “Host Communication Error (02:FE)”, check your RS-232/422 cable pinout and baud rate.

Customer Cases & Industry Applications

Case 1: Plastic Injection Molding Machine Recovery

Situation: A factory in Ohio had a Pro-face 0880001-01 fail on an aging Nissei injection molding machine. The backlight had burnt out, and the operator could no longer see the temperature setpoints. Task: The machine was 20 years old, and the OEM suggested a $15,000 electronics overhaul because they no longer stocked the legacy HMI. Action: We provided a New Surplus 0880001-01. I advised the customer to use their CF card to transfer the project, as they had lost their original programming cable. Result: The customer restored the machine to full operation in 30 minutes for a fraction of the cost of a full upgrade.

Case 2: Pharmaceutical Cleanroom Monitoring

Situation: A pharmaceutical plant needed to replace a scratched and unresponsive touch screen in a cleanroom environment. Hygiene protocols required a perfect seal. Task: They needed the exact model (0880001-01) to fit the existing stainless steel panel cutout without modifications. Action: We supplied a unit with a brand-new factory gasket. I recommended they also purchase a protective “Disposable Overlay” sheet to prevent future chemical damage from cleaning agents. Result: The HMI was replaced during a scheduled sanitation window, passing the pressure-leak test for the cleanroom enclosure immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Can I use a GP3000 or GP4000 series HMI instead? A: You can, but it’s not a “drop-in” replacement. The cutout sizes changed, and you would need to convert the software project using GP-Pro EX. If you want a 10-minute swap without cutting metal or rewriting code, the 0880001-01 is your only choice.

Q: Why is my new screen flickering or showing “snow”? A: This is often caused by electrical noise on the 24 V DC line. Ensure the FG (Frame Ground) terminal on the back of the Pro-face is connected to a dedicated ground, and that the serial cable is shielded.

Q: Does “New Surplus” mean the battery is dead? A: These units use a lithium battery for the internal clock and SRAM backup. While the battery life is long (approx. 10 years), we check the voltage of the internal battery before shipping. If it’s below 2.7V, we replace it with a fresh one so you don’t get a “Battery Low” alarm on day one.

Q: Can I backup the program from my old, broken 0880001-01? A: Yes, provided the main board is still functioning. Connect with GP-Pro PB III and use the “Upload” (Receive) function. If the project was “uploaded with editor data,” you can even edit it. If not, you’ll at least have a backup to clone into the new unit.

Q: Is the 0880001-01 the same as the GP2500-TC41-24V? A: Precisely. 0880001-01 is the internal part number/order code used by Pro-face, while GP2500-TC41-24V is the descriptive model number. They are identical.
