Description
🔹 Product Description
The Schneider Electric 140CPU67861 is a Modicon Quantum Unity Hot Standby processor designed for high-availability PLC architectures. It combines the Quantum CPU function with Hot Standby redundancy and provides a 266 MHz processor, 11 MB embedded RAM, and single-mode Ethernet communication. Schneider Electric identifies the 140CPU67861 specifically as a Unity Hot Standby processor for Quantum automation systems.
The processor is used in redundant Quantum PLC systems where a Primary controller and Standby controller operate together to maintain control-system availability. The Hot Standby architecture allows the Standby controller to take over the control role when the Primary controller becomes unavailable.

🔹 Application
The 140CPU67861 is intended for Modicon Quantum redundant control systems used in applications where controller availability is important. A typical Hot Standby system uses two Quantum PLC configurations, with one operating as the Primary controller and the other as the Standby controller. The architecture is designed so the Standby controller can assume control when required.
The CPU includes an LCD/keypad interface, Modbus connection, USB programming interface, Modbus Plus connectivity, and Ethernet communication. Schneider’s Quantum documentation also identifies a dedicated Hot Standby coprocessor within this CPU family.
🔹 Memory & System Integration
The 140CPU67861 has 11,264 KB of embedded RAM, significantly larger than the embedded RAM capacities of several other Quantum Hot Standby CPUs. Schneider documentation specifically notes that the 140CPU67861 is the exception in this family because its large RAM capacity is already integrated into the CPU.
For an existing Quantum installation, verify the Unity application, firmware revision, Hot Standby configuration, Ethernet arrangement, remote I/O architecture, and memory requirements before replacement.
🔹 Replacement Notes
Schneider Electric lists the 140CPU67861 as discontinued and states that standard service is scheduled to end on December 31, 2026. Schneider’s recommended replacement is the BMEH586040 redundant processor for the Modicon M580 platform.
The BMEH586040 should not be considered a plug-and-play replacement for an existing Quantum rack. Migration requires checking the PLC application, rack architecture, I/O, communication modules, wiring, and engineering software.
