Description

The model 8200-200 is an advanced digital overspeed trip device from Woodward’s ProTech 203 series. It features an electronic two-out-of-three (2oo3) voted architecture designed to safeguard industrial prime movers such as gas, steam, and hydro turbines. Operating on a 24 Vdc input, the system monitors speed using three independent magnetic pickups (MPUs) sampled every 5 ms. It comes equipped with dedicated CPU and MPU failure indication LEDs and a secure, lockable enclosure to prevent unauthorized configuration changes.

⚙️ Operating Standards & Installation Methods

  • Handling Precautions: Observe strict electrostatic discharge (ESD) safety protocols during installation and module configuration. Ensure power is completely shut off before handling internal connections.
  • Mounting Integration: Secure the lockable enclosure firmly onto a vibration-free industrial panel or bulkhead surface, leaving adequate clearance around the unit for ventilation and cable entry.
  • Wiring Verification: Confirm that all terminal wiring for the three independent magnetic pickups (MPUs), 24 Vdc power supply feeds, and trip output relays are securely fastened and shielded against electromagnetic interference.

🔌 Strict Startup and Shutdown Sequence

  • Pre-Power Inspection: Check that all MPU sensor clearances, external emergency stop loops, and input power lines are correctly terminated before energizing the device.
  • Startup Sequence:
    1. Apply the 24 Vdc power input to the system modules.
    2. Monitor the internal diagnostic self-tests and verify that the CPU and MPU status indicators show normal operation.
    3. Unlock the front panel using the key lock to set parameters if required, then return it to the monitor position.
    4. Arm the safety trip circuit once all three independent channels indicate ready status.
  • Shutdown Sequence:
    1. Conduct a normal procedural ramp-down of the prime mover if performing planned maintenance.
    2. Execute a manual trip test or let the safety protection logic drop out the trip outputs during an emergency event.
    3. Disconnect the 24 Vdc power source only after the turbine has achieved complete mechanical standstill.

💡 Product Usage Guide & Maintenance Best Practices

  • Online Testing Feature: Utilize the built-in frequency generator to test each individual voting channel one at a time while the prime mover remains online.
  • Diagnostics and Key Control: Regularly review event logs via the local keypad and LCD display interface. Keep the enclosure locked to ensure that operating parameters cannot be altered by unauthorized personnel.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (Q&A)

  • Q: What is the primary purpose of the 2-out-of-3 voting architecture in the 8200-200?
    • A: It ensures high system reliability and prevents nuisance trips by requiring at least two out of the three independent processing channels to agree before executing an emergency shutdown.
  • Q: How does the system indicate a failed component?
    • A: Dedicated front-panel LED indicators provide immediate visual warnings for specific faults, such as a failed MPU, a malfunctioning CPU, or a tripped speed-sensing unit.
  • Q: Can the unit be configured while the turbine is running?
    • A: Yes, parameters can be safely checked or modified using the secure front-panel key lock mechanism to switch between monitor and program modes.
