Description
The Woodward 8237-1600 is a ProTech-GII overspeed protection system designed for critical rotating equipment. It provides independent monitoring of turbine speed and acceleration and can initiate a shutdown when an unsafe overspeed or overacceleration condition is detected. The system is intended for steam, gas, and hydro turbines, as well as other high-speed rotating equipment.
The 8237-1600 is the panel-mount, high-voltage/low-voltage, voted-relay configuration of the ProTech-GII family. It uses three independent modules with 2-out-of-3 voting logic, allowing a single module to be serviced while the remaining modules continue monitoring the equipment. Woodward documentation identifies this configuration as 8237-1600 and provides a corresponding newer part number, 8237-2600, in its product-change documentation.
The ProTech-GII accepts one speed input per module from an MPU or proximity probe, provides trip and alarm relay outputs, analog speed outputs, event logging, and built-in test functions. Woodward specifies a response time in the millisecond range and a speed measurement range extending from low-speed monitoring up to 32,000 rpm.

Installation & Use
- Verify the complete part number — Confirm 8237-1600, configuration, revision, and serial number before replacement.
- Check speed sensors — Verify the three MPU/proximity-probe inputs and inspect sensor wiring, shielding, grounding, and signal quality.
- Check power configuration — The 8237-1600 uses the HV/LV configuration. Confirm the available power supply matches the installed system specification.
- Verify voting architecture — Confirm that all three ProTech-GII modules communicate correctly and that the 2-out-of-3 voting arrangement is functioning as designed.
- Perform speed testing — Use the built-in test functions to verify speed measurement, alarm operation, trip logic, and relay outputs before returning the turbine to service.
- Check communications — Verify the Modbus connection and confirm that speed, alarm, trip, and diagnostic information is correctly reported to the plant control system.
- Review event logs — Check time-stamped alarm/trip records and first-out indications following commissioning or maintenance.
⚠️ Replacement note: Woodward’s product-change documentation lists 8237-2600 as the newer corresponding part number for the 8237-1600 configuration. Woodward states that existing non-preferred ProTech-GII models continue to be supported, while newer installations are recommended to use the updated part numbers. For Rev. D or later units, Woodward also documents a field software conversion option.
