Description

🚀 Engineered for rigorous industrial environments, the Woodward 8237-1656 is a robust ProTech-GII overspeed protection system. It accurately monitors turbine rotor speed and acceleration via active or passive magnetic pickups (MPUs) and executes fast shutdown commands to the turbine’s trip valve or corresponding trip system, protecting steam, gas, and hydro turbines from catastrophic overspeed or overacceleration anomalies.

Technical Specifications & Datasheet

🔌 Operating Voltage: High Voltage 90–264 VAC / Low Voltage 18–32 VDC

🌡️ Operating Temperature: -20°C to +60°C (-4°F to +140°F)

🛡️ Enclosure Rating: IP56 dust and water-resistant bulkhead mount

⏱️ Response Time: Less than 5 ms trip actuation time

🔄 Speed Range: 0.5 to 32,000 RPM rotor speed monitoring capability

🔌 Communication Interface: Modbus RTU via triple-redundant RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485 ports

Operating Procedures & Usage Methods

🛠️ Securely mount the bulkhead enclosure in a designated zone near the turbine set, ensuring the location minimizes excessive vibrations and shields the unit from direct weather extremes while maintaining the IP56 seal integrity.

🔧 Connect active or passive MPU sensors to the designated input channels, verifying proper open-wire detection circuits and sensor alignments before initiating full system tests.

📋 Configure the 2-out-of-3 voting logic, trip setpoints, and acceleration parameters via the integrated display interface to match specific turbine safety requirements.

Power Sequencing Guidelines

🔌 Startup Sequence: Energize the primary power source to initiate internal diagnostic routines, verify zero error flags on the display panel, and enable safety relay outputs.

🛑 Shutdown Sequence: Isolate the power feed to the device only after the turbine has achieved a fully stopped or safely locked-out state to prevent erratic signal behavior during normal operation.

Product Usage Instructions

📖 The ProTech-GII utilizes a triple-modular redundant architecture allowing online module replacement while the turbine operates normally, supported by plug-and-operate backplane features and module-to-module learning.

📖 Perform routine automated overspeed tests using the internal frequency generator to simulate overspeed thresholds, verifying that trip mechanisms respond accurately without risking physical turbine overspeed.

Frequently Asked Questions

💡 Q: What is the primary purpose of the 8237-1656 model? A: It functions as a robust overspeed protection device designed to monitor turbine rotor speed and acceleration via MPUs and issue shutdown commands to the trip valve.

💡 Q: Can modules be swapped while the turbine is running? A: Yes, its triple-modular redundant design supports on-line repair and replacement of individual modules safely.

💡 Q: How does the unit sense speed changes? A: It uses active or passive magnetic pickups (MPUs) to monitor rotor rotation and calculates frequency changes to detect overspeed or acceleration.
