Product Overview & Introduction

The WOODWARD 8406-120 is an advanced microprocessor-based Engine Generator Control Package (EGCP-2) designed for comprehensive engine management and automatic generator load control. Suitable for small to medium gas or diesel generator sets operating as stand-alone units or in utility-parallel configurations, the 8406-120 integrates engine control, automatic synchronization, real (kW) load sharing, reactive (kVAR) power control, and generator sequencing into a single panel-mounted unit. Equipped with two front-panel backlit LCD displays, it allows real-time monitoring and setup tuning for critical power applications.

Operational Specifications & Guidelines

Prior to installation or handling, ensure that all electrical power sources, sensing transformers, and engine control loops are completely de-energized and locked out to prevent electrical shock or arc flash hazards. Mount the 8406-120 module securely in a panel cutout inside a non-hazardous, protected control enclosure, maintaining an operating temperature range between -20^\circC and 70^\circC and relative humidity up to 95\% (non-condensing). Connect the 9–32 VDC auxiliary power supply, 150–300 VAC PT sensing inputs, CT lines, speed/voltage bias outputs, and discrete/analog input channels strictly in accordance with Woodward Installation Manual 26174. Verify all terminal torques and system grounding integrity before restoring power.

Startup & Shutdown Sequencing

To prevent breaker tripping, out-of-phase synchronization, or engine control instability, operators must strictly follow the defined startup and shutdown procedures.

  • Startup Sequence:
    1. Verify all external wiring, potential inputs, current transformer connections, DC power supplies, and safety interlocks are securely fastened.
    2. Energize the 9–32 VDC control power supply to the WOODWARD 8406-120 module and observe the two backlit LCD screens during the automatic self-diagnostic test.
    3. Initiate the engine start sequence through the module or master control system, allowing the unit to execute automatic crank routines (including multi-crank cycles if configured) and monitor engine health until nominal speed and thermal stability are achieved.
    4. Enable the generator synchronizer functionality to monitor voltage, frequency, and phase alignment across the generator and busbar/mains PT inputs.
    5. Engage automatic load control, allowing the module to execute precise speed and voltage bias adjustments to close the generator circuit breaker at the synchronous point and seamlessly ramp load up to target parameters.
  • Shutdown Sequence:
    1. Initiate automatic soft-unloading or manually ramp active load away from the generator set back to the companion units or main utility grid.
    2. Open the main generator breaker manually or via system command once load transfer reaches the minimum threshold.
    3. Initiate the prime mover cool-down cycle at idle or nominal speed for the duration specified by the engine manufacturer.
    4. Issue the stop command through the EGCP-2 unit to shut down the engine or turbine completely.
    5. De-energize auxiliary control power to the module only after the prime mover has come to a complete standstill.
