Description

The Woodward 505E (P/N 9907-166) is a specialized microprocessor-based governor designed for single automatic extraction and/or admission steam turbines. It manages both speed/load control and extraction pressure decoupling simultaneously using dual actuator outputs.

🚀 Standard Operating Procedure

  • Pre-Start Checks: Inspect field wiring, verify high-voltage power supply (88–132 VAC / 90–150 VDC), and check emergency trip circuit status.
  • Power-On Diagnostics: Apply power to the unit. Ensure the front LCD completes boot self-tests without critical system alarms.
  • Control Mode Selection: Choose Local OCP or Remote control mode via the front panel keys or remote plant discrete signals.
  • Turbine Warm-Up & Spin: Press RUN/START to initiate speed-ramping routines (following cold, warm, or hot start profiles) up to minimum governing speed.
  • Extraction Enabling: Once the turbine reaches rated speed and minimum electrical/mechanical load conditions are met, enable extraction control via the operator panel to engage extraction pressure regulation.
  • Process Monitoring: Track turbine speed (RPM), high-pressure valve position %, extraction header pressure, and generator load continuously.
  • Safe System Shutdown: Disables extraction mode first to stabilize speed, then initiate the STOP command to ramp down turbine speed and close steam inlet valves safely.

⚙️ Parameter Configuration Guide

  • Press the PRGM key on the front control panel to switch from RUN mode to PROGRAM mode.
  • Key in the security pass code (Level 1 or Level 2) using the numeric keypad and confirm with ENTER.
  • Scroll through configuration blocks including Speed/Load Curves, Extraction/Admission Limits, Decoupling Ratios, and Transducer Calibration.
  • Select the targeted parameter value, input updated numeric values or logic flags, and press ENTER to validate.
  • Exit programming mode and select “Save Configuration” to commit changes to non-volatile EEPROM memory.

🔄 Manual / Automatic Mode Switching

  • To Select Manual Mode: Press the MANUAL key on the front keypad. This allows operators to directly adjust speed setpoints, extraction pressure setpoints, and valve limiters locally.
  • To Select Auto Mode: Press the AUTO key on the panel. The controller switches control logic over to internal automatic PID routines or external 4–20 mA / Modbus RS-485 remote commands from the plant DCS/SCADA system.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (Q&A)

  • Q: What is the main difference between the Woodward 505 and 505E models?

A: The standard 505 controls simple condensing or non-condensing steam turbines with single-valve control. The 505E includes built-in extraction/admission control ratio algorithms to automatically balance speed and extraction header pressure across two separate steam control valves without loop interference.

  • Q: What power options exist for part number 9907-166?

A: Part number 9907-166 features the High Voltage power supply option, operating on either 88–132 VAC (47–63 Hz) or 90–150 VDC.

  • Q: How does the 505E handle sudden electrical load drops while in extraction mode?

A: The controller automatically reduces extraction flow to maintain speed control and prevent overspeed, smoothly priority-shifting from pressure control to speed/load governing during electrical trip events.
