Product Description The Thermo Scientific 48C is a high-precision Gas Filter Correlation (GFC) analyzer designed specifically for the continuous measurement of Carbon Monoxide in ambient air. Utilizing an advanced infrared optical system, the 48C leverages a correlation wheel to distinguish between CO absorption and interference from other gases like water vapor. The “Trace Level” version is optimized for extremely low-concentration environments, providing the sensitivity required for regulatory ambient air monitoring and atmospheric research. Its robust design features automated temperature and pressure compensation, ensuring stable and accurate readings even in fluctuating environmental conditions.
Product Applications This analyzer is a standard tool for State and Local Air Monitoring Stations (SLAMS) and National Air Monitoring Stations (NAMS). It is used for compliance with environmental air quality standards (such as the EPA NAAQS) and in urban air quality studies. Beyond ambient monitoring, the 48C Trace Level is utilized in industrial hygiene for leak detection in high-purity gas manufacturing and as a reference instrument in laboratory research involving combustion analysis and atmospheric chemistry.

Operational Precautions
- Optical Alignment: Avoid subjecting the unit to heavy mechanical shock during transport, as this can misalign the internal infrared source and correlation wheel, leading to increased noise and reduced sensitivity.
- Sample Filtration: Always use a 47mm Teflon (PTFE) particulate filter at the sample inlet; moisture and particulate matter entering the measurement cell will contaminate the optical mirrors and require expensive factory cleaning.
- Zero/Span Calibration: Perform regular zero and span calibrations using high-purity nitrogen and a certified CO calibration gas to compensate for long-term electronic and optical drift.
- Scrubber Maintenance: Regularly check and replace the internal CO scrubber (if equipped) to ensure the internal zero-reference is truly carbon monoxide-free.
